Mime Gopi’s original name is K.Gopinathan. When he was young, his father passed away and he was taken care of by his sister and brother. He did schooling at a government school and was not very good at academics but he had interest in extra-curricular activity. He always had respect for his teachers and liked two teachers the most, his Tamil teacher Veeraiya and Nagamuthu, because they were a great source of motivation for him. When he was studying in school, he had the opportunity to participate in a fancy dress competition and enacted the role of a mentally challenged person who he had seen on his way, back to home. He had been influenced by the person and replicated the acting on the stage, which rewarded him with a first place in the competition. He was highly appreciated by his teacher Nagamuthu and that’s one reason for his liking towards teacher.
After schooling,he did his graduation at Pachaiyappa College and the mime career started at this point of time. He had six close friends namely Arun (RJ in Suryan FM) well known for his show in radio ‘Kittu Mama Susie Maami’. UdhayaPrakash (Scriptwriter), Bramma.G (‘KuttramKadithal’ movie director), Siva Kumar (HR and runs an Ad Agency), Kurinjinathan (acted in the movie ‘Mercury Pookkal’) and Vasu. They were always a group in the college. Took part in many college cultural events and the first step was a failure, but that did not stop them and they continued to give it a try again and again. Their mime guru at college was Malik, he was the one who kick-started his career.Their seniors, namely Kavin and Koti, motivated them to participate in various inter college competitions. They have been participants in various college festivals.
His performance at the Madras University celebration lightened his career, the mime was presented in front of the 3,000 audience and the chief guest of the celebration was the former minister Mr.Anbazhagan, this rose their spirit’s to high levels and they were welcomed by the audience to a great extent. The “Best Student Award” was awarded to Gopi and Arun at Loyola College by their college principal. This award inspired him to receive many more. He also had a passion for sports and was a basketball player too. He was offered a chance to act in a small role in a film “KannumKannum” directed by G.Marimuthu as a friend of ‘Prasanna’.
He went to act in the role but found acting very difficult and came out of the project half the way.Later, got introduced to a friend Thayumanavan, who was associated with director Balaji Sakthivel for the film ‘Kadhal’, who made him realize that acting was a cake walk.Gopi then understood that mime meant mind-muscle work together and incorporated enormous amount of hard work and practice to enhance his acting skills simultaneously. He started a studio on his own and taught many students, from the local to international students abroad. He has trained many future actors and actresses.Commencement of his film career grew after he made up his mind to act in movies like ‘Madras’, ‘Maari’, ‘Maya’ and‘Kabali’. He was recognized for his role as Perumal in the movie ‘Madras’ directed by 'Pa. Ranjith,' followed for his role as Loganathan in the movie ‘Kabali’.
He is very happy to have shared screen space with top notch actors in the film industry like Superstar ‘Rajinikanth’, ‘Dhanush’, ‘Nayantara’, ‘Karthi’, and hopes the list goes on. His proud moment was when Superstar Rajinikanth commented how good his performance was in Kabali. He is also indebted to the director Pa.Ranjith for giving him the opportunity to play different characters in his films Madras and Kabali. As a person, he cares for the environment and advises people to grow trees as much as possible. He does his best to keep his surrounding clean and green.
Hariraj is a Tamil film actor, who has mainly done work in the 90s. He started as a lead in Chinna Chittu (1992) and then Vasantha Malargal. He was also a supporting actor in the Rajinikanth starred Valli (1993) which was a colossal flop. After that, Hariraj didn’t return to the big screen for quite a while.
He spent his time in his hometown Coimbatore during this course of time. He practiced agriculture and also fulfilled his wishes of becoming a wildlife photographer and conservationist. His comeback was as a villain in Rendu (2006). Film offers kept coming by after that. He was highly appreciated for his role in Kadhalil Vizhunthen (2008).
Being one of the most senior actors, he’s not someone who has “got looks to kill”. He is slightly balded, a white beard and large eyes, which he uses wonderfully to show intensity. Though he is back in the industry, he’s mostly being offered supporting roles. He is in the band of actors who display immense acting finesse but are rarely used.
