A veteran Tamil and Telugu singer and an actress as well. Born in Andhra, she began her career in Tollywood when she was as young as nine years old. Her first film as a child artist was, 'Balayogini' where she played a child saint. She went on to star in several other films as a child artist with veteran actors and actresses. She was a box office hit with her movie 'Balaraju' which was directed and produced by Ghantasala Balaramayya.
She shared screen space with top heroes like
in one of his most famous films, 'Veerapandiya Kattabomman'. Her role as Sivaji's wife in the film won her critical acclaims. She was paired along with MGR, Chittor V.Nagaiah, alongside Gemini Ganesan, which once again won her critical acclaim for her role in 'Poova Thalaiya'. She also acted along with Actor Ranjan, N.T.Rama Rao and R.S Manohar as well.
Similar to M.S. Subbulakshmi, she tread along the path of singing as well. Songs such as Neethikku Thalaivanangu brought her into the limelight as a singer. In the year 2004, she was awarded Kavignar Kannadasan Award by Tamil Nadu Government. Later down the road, in the year 2007, she was handed over the Sivaji Ganesan Memorial Award, which was presented to her by the Sivaji Family.
Varalakshmi however, in the last few days of her life fell and injured her back for about six months. She then passed away on 22nd September 2009.
