Shibu Thameens is an Indian film producer and distributor, working in the South India. With his family in the business of goods distribution, Shibu studied B.Tech in the mechanical branch at Adhiyamaan College of Engineering, Hosur. He possesses an MBA degree in Materials Management too. After his education, he did not hesitate to join his family business, Thameens Group. The institution started in the early 90s with handling minor exhibitions’ operations. Gradually, the group entered the cinema industry by distributing and producing movies. Apart from these fields, this establishment is responsible for the goods’ distribution of Nestle (a major FMCG famous for KitKat and Maggi) in Kerala.
At the beginning of 2010, the board of members appointed Shibu as the sole-proprietor of Thameens. Ambitious at an early age, Shibu made up his mind and produced his first project ABCD: American Born Confused Desi. The dialogues of the movie are in Malayalam. With Mamooty’s son
Aparna Gopinath, and
Tovino Thomas in the cast, it deals with the pair of American Malayalees, who return to Kerala under some hilarious circumstances. Its production faced delays while obtaining permission from the American authorities. The movie released in the year 2013 and got mixed reviewers.
Critics termed it as a collection of simple jokes but praised the depiction of the bonding shared by the actors. Eventually, ABCD performed well commercially in Kerala and the Middle East. In 2015, he co-produced one of the much-anticipated Tamil flicks, Puli. He signed high-profile stars such as Vijay,
Shruti Haasan, Sridevi, Sudeep, and
Hansika Motwani. Shibu also roped in
Devi Sri Prasad and Chimbu as the music composer and director respectively. Analysts estimated Puli’s budget to be in the region of 100 crore rupees because of the usage of visual special effects in the adventure motion picture. Puli released on 1st October 2015 to a good opening start.
But the reviewers and fans did not like Puli, stating its awful screenplay and acting. People also criticized the slow pacing, which led to a reduced financial collection. Due to Puli’s failure, the producers agreed to compensate the fellow distributors after the protests. In 2016, Shibu released
Iru Mugan, a science fiction flick in which Vikram portrayed the dual roles. Iru Mugan was shot primarily in Malaysia, Bangkok, Ladakh, and Chennai.
In an interview, Shibu expressed his happiness over his cordial relationship with the Tamil superstar and he is willing to work with Vikram shortly. Iru Mugan became a commercial “blockbuster,” and earned 100 crore rupees. Shibu’s company handled its distribution in Kerala. The group has distributed many films with Krrish 3, R… Raajkumar, Thalaivaa, and Thupakki as notable examples. He owns Thameens Maxx, a state-of-the-art theater in Kaliyikkavila. Shibu has confirmed the plans for the sequel to 2003 hit Sammy and announced that Sammy: 2 would release in 2018.
