Marudachalam Chettiar is one of the pioneers of the Tamil cinema. He was one of the significant producers of his time. Marudachalam Chettiar started his career in the cinema as a distributor in Coimbatore territory.  He distributed Tamil, Hindi, and English movies under the banner Chellam Talkies. He distributed action films, as it had been the favourite genre for many in that territory. In 1935, Marudachalam Chettiar produced the film Dumbachari, based on the play of the same name. In 1936, he produced Sathi Leelavathi under the direction of Ellis R Dungan. All these stars belonged to the Madurai Original Boys Company, a theatre group. Marudachalam Chettiar produced the film under the banner Manorama Films. Initially, Marudachalam Chettiar approached Manick L Tandon to direct the film. As he was busy shooting Nandanar, he suggested Ellis R Dungan. Though Chettiar was hesitant, he agreed as he heard the word Hollywood director. The film was a super hit of that time, and the stars who played in the film reached heights.
