Vasanth is a journalist-turned –film director who made his career under veteran filmmaker K Balachander as an assistant director. He grew up on a staple of mainstream cinema, and he loved it because of K Balachander’s ideology. But he was sure his career was neither going to be masala movies nor the old art house fare. He chose to take an independent path that straddles both commercial and art house styles but belongs to neither. He always wanted to make a realistic cinema, whose stories were contemporary and stylistically very urban. In his film, he had urban preferences more or chose to make a film on social issues that one could find in urban India. Some of his most memorable films are undoubtedly Punnagai Mannan, Unnal Mudiyum Thambi, , Nee Pathi Naan Pathi, Nerrukku Ner, Asai, Appu and Rhythm, etc. His first directional venture, Keladi Kanmani(released in 1990) which portrayed the story of a widower and his struggle in bringing up his own daughter, was acclaimed well by the audiences. This film had noted playback singer, S P Balasubrahmanyam in the lead role. His next film was’ Nee Pathi Naan Pathi’(title taken from his first film song sung by Yesudas) was too successful.

Vasanth’s turning point in his career came from his third flick “” which had produced, and actor was seen as a leading hero. Since this film director was a writer, he kept social issues in his mind which went to fetch him a great acclaim from masses. He ruled Tamil film industry near a decade and had launched the career of Ajith Kumar, Simran, Jyotika, Suriya, Suvalakshmi and Sudha Ragunathan. He had done two projects with Mani Ratnam and two films with actor Suriya. As a film maker, he gave some challenging roles to the actors like Prakash Raj, who is known for playing a eunuch in his film Appu. Although he considers that K Balachander was much ahead of his time and made realistic cinema always, he was greatly influenced by other filmmakers too, such as Mani Ratnam, , Mahendran, Bharathi Raja. His cinema has been as much realistic as it can be. This director worked with Balachander for his 18 projects. It is still not known why he had taken a sabbatical route from his work when his films were doing extremely well. Later, of course, he had directed some ad commercials too and remained in the limelight. His films used to get much attention for music and songs even. Some of his best films have a good composition of Deva, A R Rahman. This director has changed his name in 2015 as Vasanth Sai and kick started his two projects such as ‘Sivaranjaniyum Innum Sila Pengalum’ and ‘Thanneer’. He was born in Devakottai on December 14, 1985.
