Karthik Thangavel

Karthik Thangavel is an Indian director, who made his directorial debut with the Jayam Ravi starrer cop movie, Adanga Maru. Having emerged successfully in his maiden outing, Karthik has a film experience over 15 years.

Karthik Thangavel, who was a native of Trichy, was born and bred in Chennai. Karthik discovered his interest and passion for filmmaking quite early in life. But, coming from an orthodox family, he received opposition from his family members. Despite all the opposition, Karthik was still very passionate about movies and directions. After completing schooling, he tried for a Visual communication course at Loyola College, Chennai. But he ended up taking B.A French Literature in Loyola College. Before venturing into cinema, he started working part-time in media and did report as well for three years.

Karthik started his career in Tamil cinema in the year 2003 by assisting Kamal Haasan for his venture, Raj Kamal Audios. Following it, he joined director Saran as an assistant and traveled with him for a long time. The first film, Karthik Thangavel assisted Saran was Idhaya Thirudan starring Jayam Ravi in 2006. Gradually from assistant director, he got promoted as associate director and then as Co-director. Karthik worked as the Co-director for Saran in the action thriller movie, Asal starring Ajith Kumar in the lead role.

In 2011, he assisted director Mysskin in the film Yuddham Sei. He had also associated with director Cheran. The last film Karthik worked as an associate director was Aadhi Bhagavan in 2013, directed by Ameer, which also starred Jayam Ravi in the lead. Following Aadhi Bhagavan, Karthik took a three years gap to write scripts.

Being a socially responsible person, Karthik decided to make a film regarding sexual crimes happening against women. And so he came up with the script of Adanga Maru. The shooting of the movie started in May 2018 with Jayam Ravi and Raashi Khanna in the lead. The story revolves around a cop, Subash, who takes revenge on the corrupt people after getting suspended from the department. Upon release, the film opened to mostly positive reviews, and the critics applauded Karthik for the way he handled the story.  The film was both critically acclaimed as well as became a box office success.
