Vani Ganapathy is an Indian Tamil classical dancer. She was born on June 6, 1950. Vani Ganapathy’s place of birth is Kolkata, India. Her father’s name is Ganapathy K V, while her mother’s name is Indubala Ganapathy. She has a sister Meera, a classical dancer. She married an Indian actor Kamal Hasan in 1978. After marriage, she worked as Hasan’s costume designer for many films. After ten years, they got divorced in 1988.

When Vani Ganapathy was four years old, her mother inculcated her into the dance form. She took training under the Bharatnatyam Guru T. A. Rajalakshmi in Calcutta. She began performing at the age of seven. She did her first stage performance “Arangettam.” She has traveled around the world for her performances. She moved with her parents to Bombay and continued her training under three gurus who also belonged to the same bani (tradition). The names of the gurus are Govindaraja Pillai, Mahalingam Pillai, and Kalyanaundaram. At a younger age, she and her sister Meera started performing on stage. Their mother’s encouragement and their master Kalyanasundaram’s choreography brought them great success.

During the middle 1970s, Vani Ganapathy began working as a presenter for “The Rich Heritage,” the Doordarshan program. She hosted a program based on the four primary classical dance genres. Later, the program was telecasted on B.B.C. At a pivotal time in her career, she decided to move to Chennai, the motherland of Bharatnatyam. She started performing widely in several live concerts.  In 1986, she marked her solo stage debut. Later on, she went to Bangalore, reworked choreography, and provided new levels to this art form.

As a professional artist, Vani Ganapathy has traveled to many foreign countries like Australia, Singapore, the Middle East, Malaysia, Japan, China, and London. Around 1994, she set up a dance academy “Sanchari,” where she taught Bharatnatyam to young aspirants. She has acted for the International Film Festival as Jury of the Indian Panorama. She has also served on the Doordarshan Committee and Censor Board Committee. Vani Ganapathy was honored with the Excellence Award from MG Ramchandran, who was a Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for her remarkable career and contribution to Indian art & culture.
