S. Maruti Rao

S. Maruthi Rao was a famous Indian Cinematographer and photographer who worked mainly in the Tamil Film Industry. He was born on 25 April 1921 in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, and died in 2000. He started photography during his school days, and NC Pillai, his neighbor and the editor of Flash magazine, got impressed by his skills and asked him to work in cinema. In 1940, he became an apprentice for a Telugu film Choodamani, whose cinematographer was Mama Shinde. His next project was a Tamil film, Kalamegam, in 1940, by Ellis R. Dungan, under the assistance of Marcus Batley. His career took a boost from the film Bhakthik Mala under Vel pictures. He was assigned as the assistant by the cinematographer and got the chance to handle the Mitchell camera.

Later, Maruti Roy worked in numerous films every consecutive year, Ore Iravu in 1951, Parasakthi in 1952, Bedara Kannappa in 1954, Sri Kalahastiswara Mahatyam in 1954, Hum Panchhi Ek Dal Ke in 1957, Mamiyar Mechia Marumagal in 1958, Barkha in 1959, Bindiya in 1960, Wedding Celebration 1962, Server Sundaram Click to look into! >> Read More... in 1964, Kuzhandaiyum Deivamum in 1965, Major Chandrakant in 1966, Ave Kallu in 1967, Do Kaliyaan in 1968, Enga Mama in 1970, and so on. Along with working as a cinematographer in films, he produced many Tv series and documentaries. Marti Rao served as the Selection Committee Chairman for the Film and Television Insitute of India and as an honorary member of the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. Sirayil Pootha Chinnamalar in 1990, Masanada Hoovu in 1985, Runamukthalu in 1984, and Ranganayaki in 1981 are the recent hit films by S. Maruti Rao before his death.
