P. F. Mathews

Poovankery Francis Mathews is an author from India who mainly writes in the Malayalam language and a screenplay writer who has worked in Malayalam TV and film industry. He has also won a National Award for his contribution to the industry. Along with a National Award, he has also won many other awards.

His debut film as a screenwriter was Thanthram which was released in the year 1986 starring Mammooty. He has also done many other movies like Puthran, Kutty Srank, Antichrist, and much more. For the year 2016, at Kerala State Film Awards, he was the member of the jury panel. He was born in a Christian family in Ernakulam, Kerala in India on 18th of February in the year 1960. His father’s name was Poovankery Francis, and his mother’s name was Mary Francis.

His Literary works include Jalakanyakayum Gandarvanum, Chaavunilam, Iruttil Oru Punyalan, Njayarazhcha Mazha Peyyukayayirunnu, and much more. He has completed his high school from two schools named “St. Augustine’s school” and “Don Bosco school” both of which are situated in Kochi. After that, in the year 1980, he went to St. Albert’s College situated in Kochi to complete his graduation degree in Economics.

In the year 1982, he got his master’s degree in Malayalam. At the age of ten, Mathews used to write and was passionate about writing and acting plays. At the age of 16, he started writing short stories. In one of the leading Malayalam publications of that time named “Malayala,” his stories were published. Along with Malayala, his stories were also published by Madhyamam, Manorama, Kalakaumudi, and much more. At the Kerala High Court, Mathews worked at Advocate General’s Office. In the year 1986, his first short story named Njayarazhcha Mazha Peyyukayayirunnu was published by Current Books. In the year 1996, he wrote a novel named “Chaavunilam” which was published by DC Books. The novel was based on the coastal life in Kochi. Mathew’s wife name is Shobha. They both have two sons.

Poovankery Francis Mathew has won many Awards including Kerala State TV Award in the category of Best Screenplay in the year 1991, National Film Award in the category of Best Screenplay in the year 2010 for Kutty Srank. For his novel named “Chaavunilam,” he has won State Bank of Travancore Award in the category of Best Novel in the year 1996, KCBC Yuvapratibha Award in the year 1996. Along with all these awards, Poovankery Francis Mathew, for best screenplay, has also won National Film Development Corporation of India Prize.
