Amritlal Nagar was a prominent writer and director of the Hindi literature. His forte was comedy, drama, autobiographies, and children's novels. He was born on August 17, 1916, in Gokulpura, Agra, India. The name of his parents is Vidyawati and Rajaram Nagar. He was married to Pratibha, whose maternal cognomen was Savitri Devi. Their wedding took place on January 31, 1932. They had four children namely Kumud Nagar, Aarti Pandya, Sharad Nagar, and Dr. Achala Nagar. His first job was as a clerk for All India United Insurance Company in Lucknow. However, he quit it within eighteen days. Meanwhile, he was also doing freelance writing for Nawal Kishore Press and Madhuri. He also worked as a journalist and in 1940, started writing for film’s producers and directors for seven years.

He was an expert in dubbing which involves translating the dialogues of the movie from one language to another without losing its essence. The success of screenplay and dialogues of motion picture like Bahurani, Chor, Sangam, Gunjan, Kunwara Baap, Kalpana, Uljhan, Kisi Se Na Kehna, Raja, and Paraya Dhan is because of him. He has also directed plays named Partyaag, Skandgupt, Eidgah, Yugavtar, Chetsingh, Rupiya Tumhe Kha Gaya, Nukkad Par, and Aao Bachchon Natak Likhen. In between this, he also worked at All India Radio for three years. Later, he decided to skip everything and focus only on writing.

He has authored books like Mahakaal, Trilok Vijay, Ghadar Ke Phool, Nindiya Aaja: A Lullaby, Peedhiyaan, Ye Kothevaliyan, Bajrangi Naurangi A Children's Novel, Boond Aur Samudra, Jinke Sath Jiya, Karwat, Tukde Tudke Dastaan, Shatranj ke Mohre, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Agni Garbha, Aao Bachchon Natak Likhen, Sahitya aur Sanskriti, Suhag ke Noopur, Nawabi Masnad, Bikhre Tinke, Satkhandi Haveli Ka Malik, Seth Bankemal, Amrit Aur Vish, Kripya Dayen Chaliye, Khanjan Nayan, Hum Fidaye Lakhnau, Saat Ghunghat Wala Mukhda, Meri Shreshtha Vyang Rachnayen, Naachayo Bahut Gopal, Ekda Naimishshaaranye, Chakkalas, Natkhat Chaachi: Stories, Shanti Niketan Ke Sant Ka Bachpan, Maanas Ka Hans, and many more.

He also helped the archaeological team to find the remnants of old Lucknow. He was also the member of Chairing Committee of the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) or Bhartiya Jan Natya Sangh, Executive Board Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan, and National Committee of the Indo-Soviet Cultural Society. He is also the recipient of Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar, Vishesh Samman, Vishisht Puraskar of the Uttar Pradesh Hindi Sansthan, Bharat Bharati Puraskar, and Padma Bhushan. Several publishing houses have translated his works into several languages.
