He was also awarded the Mohamed S. Farsi Foundation Scholarship for the Arts in 2012. He has written several short films which have received wide recognition from national and international audiences. Through his films, Akshay aims to cover diverse genres, such as drama, adventure, mystery, etc.Â
Akshay has always been passionate about writing. From an early age, he started writing small fiction and reportages. His first short film, ‘Mehsampur’ was released in 2018. It was an intense drama about a desperate filmmaker who drives a neurotic actress and an aging musician to a village of trauma. The film premiered at the Sydney Film Festival and won the Golden Gateway Award for Best Film. His first feature, which he wrote and produced, was ‘The Gold-Laden Sheep and the Sacred Mountain,’ released in 2019. The movie was a major breakthrough and screened at multiple national and international festivals, including Rotterdam, Mumbai, and Hong Kong. The movie was particularly appreciated by the critics and was nominated for many national and international awards. It was nominated at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in 2019 for Best Cinematography and Best Film. At the Mumbai Film Festival, it was nominated for Best Film at the Golden Gateway of India Awards. Similarly, at the Hong Kong Film Festival (2019), it was nominated for the Firebird Award in the ‘Young Cinema International Competition.’ Besides nomination, the film received various international awards for Best Film including, the FIPRESCI Prize at the Hong Kong Film Festival for assembling a narrative that blends nature and spirituality into an irresistible and immersive flow.
In 2019, Ridham Janve won the ‘New Directors Competition’ and received an award for Best Film at the Sao Paulo International Film Festival, Brazil. These experiences helped Akshay to develop an understanding of the ecosystem of filmmaking in India. He continued his pursuit of writing and also wrote some vernacular stories, including ‘Aiz Maka Falea Tuka,’ a supernatural mystery film set in Goa’s interiors. It was released on 1 May, 2023, in the Konkani language of Goa. One of his biggest achievements was an invitation from The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) for the 2021 released ‘The Gold-Laden Sheep and the Sacred Mountain.’
