Amar Talwar was born into a Sikh family in the city of Chandigarh on May, 1968. He went to school with his brother Rana at the Lawrence School, Sanawar. He is a Bollywood film and TV actor known for his role in the renowned television series, Shanti (1994) in which he played Raj 'G.J.' Singh.

Many of his roles consist of playing a father figure for the young actors, which he has portrayed well enough for most of his acting career. Before his interest in acting, he had moved to Delhi for work. Talwar was a photojournalist and worked for different corporations and channels including the Girl Child Division of the Ford Foundation and BBC. Some additional casts that Talwar was a part of include Partition (2007), Bhoot, Mittal v/s Mittal, Deewaar, and Bhavum (2002).
