Amar Talwar was born into a Sikh family in the city of Chandigarh. He went to school with his brother Rana at the Lawrence School, Sanawar. He is a Bollywood film and TV actor known for his role in the renowned television series, Shanti (1994) in which he played Raj 'G.J.' Singh.
Many of his roles consist of playing a father figure for the young actors, which he has portrayed well enough for most of his acting career. A perfect example of this would be his role as the father of Naina in the great romance drama film Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham(2001) in which he was acting with his friend,

Talwar was a photojournalist and worked for different corporations and channels including the Girl Child Division of the Ford Foundation and BBC. Some additional casts that Talwar was a part of include Partition (2007), Bhoot, Mittal v/s Mittal, Deewaar, and Bhavum (2002).
