Sona Mohapatra was born on 17th of June in 1976 at her hometown Cuttack, Odisha. She is one of the most renowned singer and composer in Indian film industry. She is a graduate and has done B.Tech from Bhubaneshwar. She has also done post-graduate and has MBA degree from Symbiosis Centre of Management & HRD, Pune. She worked as brand manager as well at Marico. After that, she started her career with jingle songs for TATA salt and Close-Up toothpaste. These jingles made her famous as they became very popular in more than 13 countries. In 2007, she decided to release her album and came up with Sona, under the banner of Sony records. This album had songs of different genres. From rock to rhythm of blues and Hindustani. She is married to composer
Ram Sampath, and they both love to work together. They got married in 2005. She recently came into limelight with Amir Khan’s talk show Satyamev Jayate, where she sang three songs. Her song Ghar Yaad Aata Hai Mujhe became a superhit.
But before Satyamev Jayate, she had already sung songs in many films. She debuted in the film industry with song Lori for movie Family in 2006, which was composed by her husband, Ram Sampath. In 2008, she sang Chayee Madhoshiyan for the movie Jumbo and Daav Laga for film
Aagey Se Right in 2009, these songs were composed by Ram Sampath. Sona Mohapatra worked with well-known composer duo Vishal-Shekhar for the film I Hate Luv Storys and sang Bahara. This song was loved by many and won her nominations at many awards. Her Bedardi Raja in 2011, for film
Delhi Belly, which was also composed by her husband Ram Sampath, brought a turning point in her career. The song was nominated for several awards as well. After this, she sang Jiya Laage Na for movie Talaash in 2012, Ambarsariya for Fukrey and Khurafati Akhiyan for
Bajatey Raho in 2013. She was appraised for Ambarsariya. The song brought her many awards. She won Best Playback Female Singer at Screen Awards (2014) and Star Guild Awards (2014).
She also won Most Entertaining Female Singer at BIG Star Entertainment Awards in 2013 and Female Vocalist of the Year at Mirchi Music Awards in 2014. She also won Best Playback Female Singer for Jiya Laage Na at Global Indian Music Awards (GiMA) in 2013.
