Om Prakash Chautala

Speaking of Haryana politics, it has faced many ups and downs. Many names have been associated with the government of Haryana and one such name is Om Prakash Chautala, the former Chief Minister of Haryana and the leader of Indian National Lok Dal party. He has been a minister for various time spans viz 2nd December 1989 to 2nd May 1990, 12th July 1990 to 17th July 1990, 22nd March 1991 to 6th April 1991 and finally from 24th July 1999 to 4th March 2004. He was preceded by Mr.Bansi Lal and succeeded by Mr. Bhupinder Singh Hooda. He was an agriculturist before joining Politics.

Once in an interview talking about his achievements, he told about his way of work and said "Our party used to go to each small village of Haryana to know about the problems of villagers and other people living there and have solved their problems."Talking about his personal life, he was born on 1st January 1935 and is married to Sneh Lata Chautala. In many of his speeches,he spokeabout fighting caste differences..On 16th January 2013 Om Prakash,Chautala was found guilty of illegally recruiting over 3000 unqualified teachers.

The Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court upheld the sentence. During 1999-2000 Chautala and 53 others were charged in connection with the appointment of 3,216 junior basic teachers in Haryana. Once he was granted four weeks parole by the high court as he was going through some medical issues. His early political career was marked by an unfortunate event where he was detained at the Delhi airport while returning from overseas for bringing a large number of wristwatches into the country.

Taking note Chautala also ran the Nyaya Yudh, or (“Battle for Justice”). The publicity campaign was also run by him which mobilized political support for his father’s successful bid for a seat in elections of state assembly. He also put a similar operation in the mid-1990s to improve the INLD’s image. Chautala also took many steps to protest against lawlessness and corruption. Still, in 1990 there were allegations that he was involved in the killing of a political opponent. He resigned by protesting in 1995, however, claiming that the government had jeopardized the state by agreeing to share the water of the Yamuna River, one of Haryana’s main stream, with neighboring places.
