Banwarilal Purohitis an Indian politician and the 21st governor of Tamil Nadu. He had also served the position of Governor of Assam from 22nd August 2016 to 29th September 2017. Also, he is the 16th governor of Meghalaya and was appointed as a member of parliament from Nagpur thrice. Talking about his early life, he was born on 16th April 1940 in Nawalgarh, Rajputana Agency, during the British Raj.
His father’s name is Shri Bhagwan Dasji Purohit, who was also a notable personality. He completed his graduation and took a degree from G.S. College of commerce and economics. At the beginning of his career, he joined Congress, and in 1984, he was elected for the post of MLA from Nagpur East constituency. After two years, he was again elected from the Nagpur South, and this time he became the minister of state for urban development and housing. Also, he was elected to the 8th Lok Sabha in 1984 as a member of the Congress party.
Later, in his career, he joined BJP and contributed to its movement to build Ram temple in Ayodhya. However, in 1999, he quitted the Bhartiya Janta party and joined the Indian National Congress after having some serious conflicts with Pramod Mahajan. Finally, in 2003 he launched his party named Vidarbha Rajya Party and, in 2004, contested the Lok Sabha elections. On 30th September 2017, President Ram Nath Kovind appointed him the governor of Tamil Nadu.
Apart from being a politician, Mr. Banwarilal gained ownership of The Hitavada, the national daily of Nagpur. Talking about his married life, He married Pushpa Devi in the year 1959 and is a resident of Raj Bhavan, Chennai.
