Ashutosh Gowariker was born 15 February 1964 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. He graduated from Mithibai College with B.Sc. in chemistry. During his school days he participated in theatre performances, folk dances and music plays, which helped him acknowledge and improve his talent and led him to attempt to build his career in the film industry. Ashutosh Gowariker began his film career modeling in commercials by GovindNihalani and Jenny Pinto.
His debut was in 1984 in the film Holi where he played the role of RanjeetPrakash.In the next years he acted in several films, such as Naam, Chamatkar, West Is West, Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro, Goonj, Gawahi, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Vazir and Sarkarnama. Ashutosh Gowariker acted in TV serials as well, such as
Kachchi Dhoop, C.I.D. and Circus. Soon after this he started his directing career, and the first film he directed was PehlaNasha in 1993. Even though this film didn't get enormous success, as well as his next movie Baazi from 1995, Ashutosh didn't give up his ambition and in 2001 he released the film which is considered as his biggest success - Lagaan. This film was internationally recognized and nominated an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, won a number of awards at international film festivals and in India it won the Film fare award best film and also won the best director.
In the following years he directed several other films as well: Swades in 2004,
Jodhaa Akbar in 2008, What's Your Raashee? in 2009 and Khelein Hum JeeJaanSey in 2010. Ashutosh directed ad campaigns as well, and his most significant success in this area was in 2003, when he directed a serial of 5 commercials for Coca Cola, which brought him the Campaign of the year award. Currently he is working on directing the film Mohenjo Daro which is supposed to be released in 2015.
