He is one of the best editors having studied in a reputed institute and having more than the required knowledge and skill in his field. When he was young, he enjoyed watching movies like everyone but did not give much thought about becoming a film editor one day. He grew up in Calicut, which seems to be an unlikely place to dream of being a filmmaker.

As a child, Suresh Pai used to go to the "Crown" theatre which used to run international films. For Suresh, studying at FTII was very inspiring as it has varied culture and thoughts and they had film screening of international movies every evening which helped him absorb multiple aspects about the art. For some time, he worked in Plus Channel but quit in six months since he was not comfortable with the hierarchy in the office. He then joined as an assistant to Aseem Sinha which worked out very well for him, and they also had a great rapport. Suresh Pai wanted to start independent, but suddenly he was offered no job.

He was about to go to Chennai looking for work when he got a chance for editing a Hindi serial "Hip Hip Hurray."
