Malini Parthasarathy was born on the 15th of August, 1959. She is the great-granddaughter of S. Kasturi Ranga Iyengar, the patriarch of the Kasturi family that owns, The Hindu. Malini graduated in History from Stella Maris College, Chennai. She completed her masters, in Journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She completed a Ph.D. from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi in 2008. After she graduated from Columbia, she briefly worked as a Visiting Journalist at the Washington Post. Malini has been a political journalist for over three decades, writing reports and editorials on significant themes in Indian politics, her primary focus being India’s relations with Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
She has been an editor of The Hindu from 2013-2016. She also served as an Executive Editor from 1996 to 2004. During her tenure as editor, the Mumbai edition of The Hindu was launched. Some of the highlights of Malini’s career were a series of interviews with Indian Prime Ministers, Rajiv Gandhi, P.V Narasimha Rao, I.K Gujral, and V.P Singh. She held the first-ever interview by an Indian Journalist of former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf. She was the first Indian journalist to interview Condoleezza Rice, the then US National Security Advisor in the Bush administration, and Strobe Talbott, Deputy Secretary of State in the Clinton administration, after India’s nuclear test. Malini was a member of the Governing Body, Auroville Foundation, until recently. She succeeded N. Ram as the Chairperson of The Hindu in 2020.
