Rohit Jugraj Chauhan is a film director in Bollywood and Punjabi Cinema. He was born in Yamuna Nagar, a small town in Haryana. The public does not know much about his personal and family life. He met the (then) 33-year-old
, while he was shooting for his first film, James, through her male cousin who was also a close friend of his. They broke up after being in a serious relationship for two years because they found too many differences in their personalities.
In an interview with the filmy beat in 2010, after Viveka Babajee's suicide, he said, "We broke up without any bitterness. It was not working out. She was involved in other relationships after that. We did not keep in touch." He was, understandably, distraught after their break up, and shocked at receiving news about her suicide.
When it comes to his professional life, Rohit Jugraj Chauhan has been reasonably successful. The first movie he directed was James in 2005. Before that, Rohit had been the assistant director for
for the film Kehtaa Hai Dil Baar Baar and
Ram Gopal Varma
for the film Bhoot. He was in charge of TV Campaign for the film Darna mana hai, also produced by Ram Gopal Varma.
His first movie James did not do very well at the box office. It was a huge disappointment for its producers. His second project, Superstar, did not receive much appreciation from critics either. Due to repeated failure to make an impact in Bollywood, Rohit then decided to shift his focus to the Punjab Film Industry.
In a special interview with The Indian Express, he said, "I wasn't getting to say my stories here in Bollywood. They were just not letting me tell my stories my way, and I had found my roots back to my culture, my language and they let me say it my way."
His first taste of success was brought to him, by the film Jatt James Bond, an Indian Punjabi film, starring
and Zareen Khan as leads. The film collected more than 5.5 Crore in the first two days after its release. Rohit Jugraj won the PTC Punjabi Film Awards, 2015 'Best Debut Director' and the 'Best Director' awards for this film.
Since then, success has always been on his side. With more Punjabi blockbusters like Sardaarji and Sardaarji 2 coming his way, Rohit Jugraj has, made his name in the Punjabi film industry. On being asked if he will ever try to re-enter Bollywood, he says, "Punjabi cinema will always stay close to my heart. Even after I start making Bollywood films, let's say that Punjabi cinema is something I would keep doing."
From writing screenplays for films and being assistant director for eminent Bollywood directors like
Sanjay Leela Bhansali
and Ram Gopal Varma, to making his name in the Punjabi film industry, Rohit Jugraj Chauhan has not had an easy journey. His determination and hard work has helped him achieve the success he enjoys today.
