Ayan Mukherjee is the son of actor Deb Mukhejee and had acted in Hindi and Bengali movies. He is also the grandson of Sashadhar Mukherjee, who established Filmalaya Studios in Mumbai and rolled out super hit films such as ‘Love in Simla’ ( debut film of Sadhana), ‘Ek Musafir Ek Hasina’ ‘Dil Deke Dekho,' etc. from Filmalaya. Ayan is also the nephew of yesteryear actor Joy Mukherjee who acted in many hit movies and especially debuted with Sadhana in ‘Love in Simla’. The actor is the cousin of Kajol and Rani Mukherjee.

Ayan was born in Kolkata on 15 August 1983. He was a dropout from higher studies in college and joined as an assistant to Ashutosh Gowariker when he was making ‘ Swades’. Later, he also assisted Karan Johar for a film ‘ Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’. Soon he took a break from filmmaking and wrote the screenplay for ‘ Wake Up Sid’ that he showed to Karan Johar. Karan insisted that Ayan should become a director. Thus, he directed the film ‘Wake Up Sid’ with Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma; the film was a commercial and critical success.

Ayan got the Best Film Director debut award from Filmfare for ‘Wake Up Sid’. The next film of Ayan was Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’, again under Karan Johar’s banner Dharma Productions. The film had Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor in lead roles, and the film was the highest grossing movie of the year.

Although Ayan is a Bengali, he has stated that he would not direct any Bengali movie as it would not reach the audiences across the globe. After two consecutive successes in Bollywood, Ayan is planning to do a mythological superhero film that is untitled. The film will have Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in the lead role. Ayan may even sign Amitabh Bachchan in a significant role for this movie. Everybody is awaiting the confirmation of the same. Karan Johar has even tweeted the release of the untitled film on December 23, 2016. The film will roll on the floor in February 2016, and Ayan expects to complete the shooting within nine months.

Ayan Mukherjee was born on 15 August, 1983, in the Bengal city, Kolkata. He is a Bollywood movie director.

He was born to a Brahmin family in Kolkata. He is the son of Manisha Mukherjee and Deb Mukherjee, who is a movie actor in Bengali cinema. The director has a Bollywood connection. Actor-director Joy Mukherjee was his uncle. Well-known actresses, Kajol and Tanisha, are his first cousins. Another renowned name in the Hindi movie industry, Rani Mukerji, is his second cousin. Director Ashutosh Gowariker is his brother-in-law. The actor-director is 5 feet 9 inches tall.

The director was brought up in Mumbai. He went to Jamnabai Narsee School for his schooling. He attended the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology to study engineering, but left college soon after the first year to pursue his passion of filmmaking.

He started assisting Ashutosh Gowariker in the movie, ‘Swades’, in 2004, after dropping out of college. In 2006, he assisted Karan Johar in the movie, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

Ayaan made his full-fledged movie as a director in Wake Up Sid, in 2009. He first wrote the screenplay of the film and showed it to Karan Johar. He was so impressed with the screenplay that he decided to turn it into a movie. Ayan was chosen to direct the film. The film had Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma in the lead. The movie received rave reviews. The critics also appreciated the movie. He won the Best Debut Director Filmfare Award for his directorial debut. He shared the award with Zoya Akhtar, who won the award for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

His second film was also under Dharma Productions. It was, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, released in 2013. The film again had Ranbir Kapoor in the lead, along with Deepika Padukone. It was also a blockbuster. He got a Filmfare nomination for this.

Before becoming a full-time director, he did a cameo appearance in the film, Home Delivery, released in 2005. The film starred Vivek Oberoi, Mahima Chaudhary, and Ayesha Takia. In 2009, he also worked on the movie, Luck by Chance. The film did average business at the box office.

His association with Ranbir Kapoor continued. In 2013, he contributed a bit to the movie ‘ Besharam’, starring Ranbir. However, the film bombed at the box office.

He is planning his next movie with Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor. It will be a superhero flick.

The actor-director says he doesn’t plan to work in Bengali flicks in the future.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee

Hrishikesh Mukherjee is a film director, writer and producer in Bollywood. He is well known for giving a facelift to the career of Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jaya Bhaduri, Rekha and Rajesh Khanna.  Hrishikesh was born in Calcutta on 30 September 1922. He began his career as an editor and assistant director under Bimal Roy. Much earlier, he was associated with Calcutta’s New Theatres (owned by B.N.Sircar) where he learnt camera techniques and editing part of filmmaking. Later he moved to Mumbai in 1952 and got associated with Bimal Roy and had associated with the editing of classics like ‘Do Bigha Zamin’, ‘Madhumati’ and ‘Devdas’. After working as an assistant director, he chose to become an independent director by making films like ‘Musafir’ and ‘Anari’. While Musafir was not a success movie‘Anari’ was a box-office hit and won five Filmfare awards.  But his most serious film was ‘Anuradha’ that featured Miss India Leela Naidu with Balraj Sahni, Asit Sen and others. The film was based on a short Bengali novel that had the musical score of Pandit Ravi Shankar. The film won President’s Award as the best feature film, and it also entered the Berlin International Film Festival.  After ‘Anuradha’, Hrishikesh Mukherjee gave to Indian film industry classics movies such as ‘Anupama’, ‘Satyakam’, ‘Gaban’ etc.  ‘Anupama’ is a great film; it did not have Sharmila Tagore ever speaking a single word, and the silence of the film had a poetry mix that is still the best movie of Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore together. The music of Hemant Kumar was a  plus point in the film.  After ‘Anupama’ Hrishikesh made ‘Satyakam’ and it is his best film to date. This movie is considered to be one of the best ones of Dharmendra.  Earlier Hrishikesh Mukherjee made commercial films like ‘Asli Naqli’ and ‘Anari’ which had best music by Shankar Jaikishan.  In 1970, he made ‘Anand’ with Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan; the movie depicted the life of a cancer patient. The film received many Filmfare awards and was appreciated well by critics and audience. Next, he made ‘Namak Haram’ again with Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna. The film movie made Amitabh closer to the audience against Rajesh Khanna and after this film, Rajesh Khanna’s superstardom declined slowly.   Hrishikesh Mukherjee also launched Jaya Bhaduri in ‘Guddi’. Later, he made films with Amitabh and Jaya and gave few classics films such as ‘Abhimaan’, ‘Mili’ and ‘Chupke Chupke’. In ‘Chupke Chupke’ Hrishikesh Mukherjee signed Amitabh and Dharmendra together and included actresses like Jaya Bhaduri and Sharmila Tagore. After Jaya Bhaduri had got married, the director had cast Amitabh again in two more films with Rakhee Gulzar ( ‘Bemisal’ and ‘Jurmana’) which were again box office successes.  In 1980, he directed Rekha In ‘Khubsooorat’ which is Rekha’s best film to date. The director even made comedy films like ‘Gol Maal’  and ‘Naram Garam’ with Utpal Dutt and Amol Palekar.   Hrishikesh contributed to Indian cinema for four decades and had drawn a line between commercial and art cinema. He is known for making films that had a social message too for middle-class society. He is the recipient of Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 1999 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2001. He is even felicitated by NTR National Award in 2000 and won eight Filmfare awards. The filmmaker passed away on 27 August 2006.
