Ayan Mukherjee was born on 15 August 1983 in Kolkata. He is a Bollywood movie director. He is the son of Manisha Mukherjee and Deb Mukherjee, who is a Bengali movie actor. The director has a Bollywood connection. Actor-director Joy Mukherjee is his uncle. Well-known actresses Kajol and Tanisha are his first cousins. The director was brought up in Mumbai. He went to Jamnabai Narsee School for his schooling. He attended the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology to study engineering but left college soon after the first year to pursue his passion for filmmaking. He started assisting Ashutosh Gowariker in the movie, ‘Swades’ in 2004 after dropping out of college. In 2006, he assisted Karan Johar in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

Ayaan made his full-fledged movie as a director in Wake Up Sid in 2009. He first wrote the screenplay and showed it to Karan Johar. He was so impressed with the screenplay that he turned it into a movie. Ayan was chosen to direct the film. The film had Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma as the lead stars. The movie received rave reviews. The critics also appreciated the movie. He won the Best Debut Director Filmfare Award for his directorial debut.
