Anna Kashfi

Anna Kashfi, real name Joan O'Callaghan was an American film actress who was born in India. She worked as an actress in Hollywood during the 1950s. Born in India to an Indian state railways traffic superintendent William Patrick O'Callaghan and Phoebe, Kashfi grew up in Calcutta. When her age was thirteen, she went to Cardiff in Wales along with her family. On her relocation to Wales, she did the job of a waitress in Cardiff. After earning there, she went to London, where she pursued the modeling career.

In the year 1956, she made her debut in "The Mountain". She played the role of a Hindu girl. She always remained as an Indian actress and model. Kashfi was the name of her friend but she picked that name for herself. Some people used to call her Joanna, so she named herself Anna Kashfi. In 1957, she did her next movie Battle Hymn in which she played a Korean girl. She played the character of an African American wife of a singer ‘Nat King Cole’. This was her last picture. After that, she made small appearances on television. It includes series like Adventures in Paradise. She had the habit of consuming alcohol due to which her acting career got destroyed. She has a tough life as she was always in controversies. At the age of 22, a question was put on her identity. Her parents were not considered as her biological parents and this made her sustenance tough. But she fought it well. It was difficult for an Indian to gain fame abroad that time. But Kashfi through her acting and talent made it possible.

In 1974, she married James Hannaford who was a salesman and also had a grandson Michael Brando. Kashfi died a year back, on August 16, 2015 in Washington.
