Uma Bose, born on January 22, 1921, fondly called “The Nightingale of Bengal,” was a musical prodigy who left a remarkable memory in the hearts of people who love music. She was born to Prabha Bose and Dharani Bose and was brought up in an eminent, well-to-do family in Calcutta. She was born in the middle of an ongoing Renaissance of Bengali art and culture. From a very young age, she used to take lessons in classical music. She recorded her first solo song at the age of 13. Her songs were loved by many.
Later, she recorded duets with Sri Dilip Ray, who was one of her musical Gurus. Uma Bose learned Hindustani classical music from Vishmadev Chatterjee for a period. She was fortunate enough to learn a song from Rabindranath Tagore called “Mone Ki Dwidha Rekhe Chole Gele”. In 1934 she sang a song for Gandhiji in Sarat Bose‘s house. The song was ‘Mere to Giridhar Gopal’. Since then, Gandhiji called her ‘Nightingale’ because of her melodious voice. On another occasion, she sang a song called “Aaj Sakhi Koun Bajat Bansuria” for Gandhiji. Even Subhas Chandra Bose (Netaji) used to admire her songs.
“Akasher Chaand” and “Chaand Kahe Chameli Go” are some of the songs sung by Uma Bose at the age of 17, which were loved by many. Some of her other famous songs include “Agan N Dahe,” “Hari He Tumi Amar,” “Aisi Hori Machai,” and so on. “Sudhakonthi Uma Basu” was the autobiography of a forgotten singer. Her autobiography discusses many facets of life.
It has insightful stories, such as how she missed a golden road and the story of an artist who couldn’t fulfill her wish. She had to withdraw from her passion for singing when her health started to deteriorate. She took her last breath due to tuberculosis on January 22, 1942, when she was only 21 years old. Uma Bose was an artist who had the potential to curate more sophisticated masterpieces if she was redeemed from the cruelty of her musical life being cut off due to the disease. Uma Bose was indeed a gem.
