Kartik Das Baul is a Bengali singer. He hails from Gushkara, Shantiniketan, West Bengal. He is a Baul singer, a singer who continues a tradition of folk music that began in Bengal around a thousand years ago. He has collaborated with Oikyotaan and has infused various forms of Baul into their songs. He came into the field of Baul singing when the late filmmaker and scholar Bhaskar Bhattacharya spotted him singing on trains. As Bhaskar Bhattacharya was working with a French documentary crew making a film on Bauls, they suggested they film him learning how to be a Baul.
Kartik Das Baul has given performances abroad, and he has also sung at the festival of India in 1985. He has also performed in Japan, Berlin, etc. He is also the protagonist of the film ‘Noton Projomner Baul’, or ‘The New Generation Baul’. He was also an integral part of the presentation at the World Sacred Music Festival in Berlin, which was held in December 2003. He has also worked with the music department in movies such as Via Darjeeling (2008), Mangal Pandey (2005), Prohor (2002) and Anuranan (2006). He was also a playback singer for the movies Four Chapters, Hothath Dekha, and III Smoking Barrels.
