At a rented residence in Ahiritola, his maternal home in north Calcutta, Roy Bahadur Kalikrishna and Sarala Bala Devi welcomed Birendra Krishna Bhadra on August 4, 1905. (now Kolkata). Later, the family relocated to the residence purchased by his grandmother Yogo Maya Devi at 7 Ramdhan Mitra Lane. Kali Krishna Bhadra's father was a linguist proficient in 14 languages. He worked as an interpreter in a lower court and later gained notoriety in the Bengali literary scene of the era. In 1927, Kali Krishna was given the title of Roy Bahadur after marrying Sarala Bala Devi, the second child of Kalicharan Ghosh, a well-known Police Court attorney. Bhupendra Krishna and Birendra Krishna were the two sons of Roy Bahadur Kali Krishna. Birendra Krishna Bhadra graduated from Scottish Church College in Kolkata in 1928 after passing the Intermediate exam in 1926.

He spent several years in the early 1930s working for All India Radio, India's National Radio broadcaster. During this time, he produced and adapted several plays. Today, he is best renowned for his beautiful Sanskrit recitation and for hosting India's first radio program, Mahishashura Mardini (1931), a collection of songs and shlokas transmitted by All India Radio Calcutta (currently Kolkata) at 4:00 am, during the dawn of Mahalaya. In Bengali theater, he also performed in and directed various plays. He also penned the screenplay for the movie Nishiddha Phal (1955). He modified and reorganized several classics to create eminent radio plays. A two-hour show named Mahishashura Mardini, which recounts the legendary conflict between goddess Durga and the demon king Mahishashura was broadcast first on All India Radio in Kolkata in the 1930s. Bani Kumar wrote the program's script, and Pankaj Kumar Mallik was in charge of the music. Bhadra recited it aloud. In 1931, the Mahalaya broadcast it for the first time. Since then, except in 1976, All India Radio has aired this show on Mahalaya. The show, originally debuted as a live performance, has aired since 1952 in its pre-recorded format. Mess No. 49 is one of the plays that Bhadra penned. He also directed the theatrical drama Sahib Bibi Gulam, an adaptation of the well-known book by renowned author Bimal Mitra.

Subarna Golak, a novel by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay that he dramatized in 1952, was made into a movie with the same name in 1981. He also created the well-known radio play Shahjahan, based on Dwijendralal Ray's historical play of the same name. His rendition of the recitation was so well-liked that when the voice of renowned Bengali actor Uttam Kumar Uttam Kumar was matinee idol of Bengali cinema.
