Tapas Sen is a well-known lightning designer who had worked predominantly in the Entertainment field. He was born on September 11, 1924, in Dhubri, Assam, India. His father was Matilal Sen, and his mother was Subarnalata. He was an International artist who had worked for Paris, Moscow, and other places outside India. In 1940, he started his career with Bengali theatre in Kolkata. In 1943, he was included in the theatre for the production of Shadow play. It was his first project.

Tapas Sen had created lightning for stage venues all over the India including metro cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Mumbai. He has worked for Birla theatre, Kamani, Siri fort auditorium, and Rabindra Natya Manch. Being an architectural lighting designer, he has also created lighting designs for some highlighted monuments like Khajuraho, Konark, Elephanta, and Ujjain. In 1988, Tapas Sen got an opportunity to work at the International level. He designed the opening ceremony of the festival of India in Moscow and Paris.
He worked for this event along with Dashrath Patel. Afterward in 1993, he got a significant achievement by becoming the only Indian lightning designer who was invited at International Colloquium on Film, Television, and Theatre lightning. It was organized at Bradford, United Kingdom, by the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television. Tapas Sen was so passionate about his work that he worked on the Indian stage even his last time. In January 2006, he completed the lighting project for Tagore’s play Visarjan.
This play was premiered at Madhusudan Manch in Kolkata, West Bengal. But unfortunately, he was not able to complete his last project. Then, this project was completed by his son named, Joy Sen. Tapas Sen died on June 28, 2006, in Calcutta, West Bengal, India. He died of a heart attack. Tapas Sen was so famous for his work that he was known as Wizard of Illumination. He had received numerous awards in his career time. In 1972, he received Asia’s Best Light Designer Award. He received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1974. In 1998, he received Kalidas Samman by Madhya Pradesh Government.Â
