Shekhar Chatterjee is a Bengali actor and director who was born in 1924 in Calcutta.He has struggled a lot in his early life. This hard working actor started his career by working Bengali theater in the 1950s. He was renowned for his remarkable skills and strong political views. He was so firm and determined towards his goals. He was also a member in leftist theater groups like Communist party's Indian people's theater association. UtpalDutt's little theater group and Joan Littlewood’s Theater workshop along with his group.

He was the finest actor and very hard working because of which he was known for his Shakespearean roles and for playing shard up Singh in Dutt's 1965 play calls. He has acted in almost hundred movies till the time he aged sixty likes: Ragini, Munchak, kidnap, maa, Gandhi, biochar, Pratima, Ali Baba, sesh para,etc.AGRADOOT'S 1955 Directoral film noir SABAR UPAREY was his first break. He has done many unforgettable roles in most of MRINAL SEN'S films, including EK ADHURI KAHAANI, CHORUS, MRIGAYAA.Chatterjee was active in all that of Indian, Bengali and world cinemas.

He has also done many roles internationally as HUSEYN SHAHEED SUHRAWARDY in RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH'S biographical epic. He has also worked as a director and had mostly adapted the worker of German authors like BERTOLD BRECHT, PETER HANDKE. He had also translated their German plays into Bengali. He was the verydiligent person, and he directed movie VASUNDHARA in 1983 and which won as the best Bengali film at 31st national film awards.

The directorate of film festivals applause it for " its sincere attempt to depict the struggle against social injustice” he has proved himself in every fieldand had accomplished his dreams through his unflagging nature. He has also worked as a screen writer in two films which were: 1. RAAG ANURAG in 1975 as Shekhar Chattopadhyay2. BASANTA BILAL IN 1973 as Shekhar Chattopadhyay Chatterjee's Brecht productions were seldom adapted to only local settings which gave a real touch.IC praised this approach of his as veritable.

His work was so applauded that casting director DOLLY THAKORE recommended Chatterjee for one of the roles after seeing him onstage in Kolkata and noting that he shared Suhrawardy's large stature.He was a very versatile actor and would be remembered even in the upcoming generation for he has left the great impact in Indian cinema.
