Meghnad Bhattacharya

Meghnad Bhattacharya is a famous Indian theatre director and actor mainly working in Bengali stage plays and cinema. He was born in 1952 and founded a Bengali theatre group, Sayak. He worked as a philosopher and guide for the group that produced twenty-one full-length and seven short-length plays in 35 years. Under the leadership of Meghnad Bhattacharya, Sayak has grown up to the heights and built up a theatre hall at North Kolkata in 1979, Bijon, in the name of the father of Bengali theatre, Late Bijon Bhattacharya. Meghnad Bhattacharya is one of the Executive members of Paschim Banga Natya Akademi and Minerva Centre of Excellence, West Bengal.

He won Best Production Awards at CCI & Abhinoy Patrika 1979 for Dui Huzurer Goppo, Shiromoni Award by Asian Paints 1991 for Daibaddha, Anadalok Samman by ABP 2002 for Andhagali, and Tripti Mitra Memorial Award by Bengal Srachi Group 2005 for Saanjbela. Meghnad won the Best Actor Award at Ultarath Award for Anubikshan in 1983 and Paschim Banga Natya Akademi Award for Daibaddha in 1991. For best direction, he won Paschim Banga Natya Akademi & Lebedov Gorky Sadan Awards in 1985 for Gyanbriksherfol and Paschim Banga Natya Akademi & Partha Pratim Memorial Award for Karnabati in 1996.

For his remarkable contribution to theatre, Meghnad Bhattacharya won Nandikar National Festival Award in 2001, Anya Theatre Natya Swapnakalpa Award in 2003, and Nandipat Youth Festival Award in 2004.
