Unlike many others of its kind that are usually a common sight in the Indian TV scenario, Adaminte Variyellu almost feels like a radical departure. Originally aired as Vallamai Tharayo Vallamai Tharayo is a Tamil soap opera. The show c >> Read More... on Tamil Television, its Malayalam dub is aired on the Flowers Channel. The theme of the coming of age of a naive young girl into a mature and independent woman is not new for Indian television, but it is how that journey is often portrayed that makes all the difference. Accordingly, Adaminte Variyellu treads a different track altogether in a strikingly masterful way. The progressive and modern values depicted and upheld add to the overwhelming feeling of freshness the show contributes to.

The story is primarily about Abhi, about her demanding and  challenging metamorphosis into an individual on her own right, from a meek and complacent girl to a brave and knowledgeable person fully capable of standing up for herself. Despite being the college topper, Abhi is forced to enter into married life so soon. Her reservations and protests are given scant regard as her traditional family firmly believes that marriage alone completes a woman’s life. Thus, when the proposal for an alliance from a prosperous household lands, the family members seal the deal, even if that means little or no consent from the bride-to-be. After hours of persuasive pressurizing which almost borders on blackmailing, the marriage happens, and Abhi's desire for higher studies evaporates into thin air. Even before the wedding, adequate hints are dropped about the possible sources of potential friction.

As is expected, Abhi finds herself gasping for breath between a belligerent husband and a bellicose sister-in-law. Her control freak husband treats her as expendable collateral and expects her to fully dedicate herself to the service of his family, like a housemaid would. Years go by with no apparent change in the dynamics of their relationship and eventually, it reaches a breaking point. As was mentioned before, the people behind the show deserve immense praise and recognition for the bold work they have put in to question the archaic and patriarchal notions that, unfortunately, are often normalized and even glorified.
