of My First Wife was a fantasy sitcom that originally aired on Star Plus from July 3 2000 to June 23, 2003, and was created by Nirja Gulerib, who was already well on her way to becoming an acclaimed female director and therefore was able to make Gharwali Uparwali as one of the most popular shows in the history of Indian television, the poster of the series even branding themselves as “India’s No.1 Comedy Series”.
The story revolves around a man, who remarries after the death of his first wife resulting in a confrontation with the spirit of his first wife who had never left their house, to begin with. Initially, the heart of the first wife causes trouble in the household but can make amends with her past by the end. The series has many funny situations with the neighbors and Sunny, the child who now has to deal with two mothers instead of one. This show was the first-ever of its kind in the history of Indian television with the fantasy element and sitcom format, which resulted in a trend and gave birth to many other popular shows like Karishma Ka Karishma, Shararat, etc. Along with the incredible cast and star-studded cameos, the show became a household name for Indian television.
