The most prestigious Award ceremony in the Malayalam Film Industry, the Asianet Film Awards brings together all the precious members of this family every year for recognition of talent and a marvelous cultural extravaganza. On 9th January 2011, Willingdon Island in Kochi hosted the 13th Asianet Film Awards in all its magnificence and glory. Amitabh Bachchan, who debuted in the Malayalam language genre with the movie ‘Kandahar’ (2010), was the chief guest for the spectacular evening and was conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his legendary career in Indian Cinema, the award presented by the megastar Mammootty.
A crowd of 25000 movies fans gathered on a glamorous evening to catch a glimpse of their favorite Actors and Actresses. The event began with a stunning classical performance by Meera Nandan. The star-studded evening was attended by a plethora of iconic personas from across Tollywood and Bollywood, and witnessed some unforgettable performances by the talented artists of the industry. B. Unnukrishnan, Sabu Cheriyan, Fazal Gaffur, Munna, Ranjith Menon, Shafna, Sarayu, Mithra Kuriya, Amala Paul, Ranjini, Dhanya Mari, Soniya Aggarwal, Rekha, Siddhiqui, Manniyanpillai Raju, Narain, Annop Menon, Sukumari, K.P.S.C. Lalitha, Ambika, Menaka, Babu Antony, Laxmi Gopala Swami, Manoj K. Jayan, Tamil Actors Vijay and Karthi, Jayaram, Sheela Devi, Jagathy Shreekumar, Rehman were some of the gemstones of present in the ceremony.
The function was organized to recognize and reward the commendable work done by the industry in the year 2010. 'Pranchityettan and the Saint' was given the award for Best film; Mammootty was selected as the Best Director for ‘Prachiyettan and the Saint,' ‘Best Actor’, and ‘KuttySrank.'Nayantara was chosen the Best Actress for the role of Nayantara in the movie ‘Bodyguard.’ The Best Director Award went to Lal for the comedy horror ‘In Ghost House Inn.’ The Best Screenplay Award was bagged by Sathyan Anthikkad for ‘KadhaThudarunnu’; for the same movie, Venu was chosen as the Best Cinematographer.
Best Editor was given to Arun Kumar for the thriller ‘Cocktail.’ ‘Oru Naal Varnum's’ music got M. G. Sreekumar the Best Music Director Award and Murukan Kattakada the title of Best Lyricist. Best Supporting Actor was won by Nedumudi Venu for the enactment of Elsamma Enna Ankutty in the movie ‘Best Actor’. Best Supporting Actress went to Lakshmipriya for her part in ‘Kadha Thudarunnu.’ Innocent won the Best Character Actor Award for ‘KadhaThudarunnu.’ The role of Parvathi won Samvrutha Sunil the Best Character Actress Award.
Dileep was chosen the Most Popular Actor for ‘Pappy Appach’, ‘Bodyguard’, ‘Kaaryasthan’, and ‘MarykkundoruKunjaadu.’ Mamta Mohandas was selected the Most Popular Actress for her appearance in ‘Anwar’ and ‘KadhaThudarunnu.’ No movie is complete without a classy villain. Asif Ali, for his praiseworthy role in ‘Apoorvaragam’, was chosen the Best Actor in a Villain Role. Suraj Venjaramoodu won the Best Actor in a Comic Role. Best Star Pair was won by Kunchacko Boban and Archana Jose Kavi for their on-screen chemistry in ‘Mummy & Me.’ Best Male Playback Singer was won by Hariharan for his mesmerizing voice in “AaroPadunnu” in the movie ‘KadhaThudarunnu.’ Shreya Ghoshal, the prominent singer, acclaimed for her work in Hindi music, won Best Female Playback Singer for “Manjumazhakkalam” in ‘Aagathan.’
Sreenivasan won Special Jury Award for ‘AthmaKadha.’ Golden Star Award went to Mohanlal. Youth Icon of the Year was given to Jaysurya for various movies like ‘Cocktail’, ‘Happy Husbands’, ‘Nallavan’, ‘Four Friends.’ Among the children, Best Child Artist (Female) went to Baby Anikha for her role as little Laya in ‘Kadha Thudarunnu’ while Master Alexander for his role in ‘T D Casan Std VI B’ won the Best Child Artist (Male) Award. In the Tamil genre, Popular Hero Award in Tamil Films was given to Vijay, and Special Award for Best Film on National Integration was won by Major Ravi for Kandahar. On-stage performances by singers Shreya Ghoshal, Hariharan, K.S.Chithra,Suvi Suresh, M.G.Sreekumar and G.Venugopal were enthralling.
Other Stars as Lakshmi Rai, Meera Nandan, Meghna Raj, Remya Nambeesan, Teja Sree, Anuya Bhagavath, Reema Kallingal with their colorful acts kept the audience entertained throughout the evening. The program aired on TV in two parts on 29th and 30th January 2011 on Asianet.
