Veeram is a Malayalam-language historical drama released in 2017. Directed by Jayaraj, the film stars Kunal Kapoor Born on 18th of Oct in the year of 1977 to a Punja >> Read More... , Shivajith Padmanabhan, Satheesh Menon Satheesh Menon was born on 10th March 1950, in Iri >> Read More... and others. It tells the story of Chandan Chekaver, a lionhearted warrior from the North Malabar region of Kerala.

Plot

Veeram is an adaptation of the Hamlet, the famous story by William Shakespeare.

The story revolves around Chandu Chekaver, a mighty, powerful and valiant warrior from the North Malabar region of Kerala. In the beginning of the film, we are exposed to his bravery and proficiency as he fights an intense duel. On his way back, he visits a magician, who predicts that Chandu will become commander of the army and eventually rise in his ranks to become the Overlord.

Chandu is ecstatic at this prediction and finds ways to make the prophecies come true. The first one does so, soon enough. The rest of the story revolves around the path that Chandu takes to fulfill the second prophecy. His entire world is turned upside down as he tries to realise and maintain the prophecies, turning him from an unafraid warrior to a scared and inept overlord.

His road is filled with betrayal, greed, selfishness and regret, but also love. As we follow his story, we see the lessons he learns and indeed, the legacy he leaves behind.

Star Performance

The star of this film is undoubtedly Kunal Kapoor. He plays both sides of Chandu with perfection, the brave warrior and the paranoid ruler. The way he portrays the emotions of greed, guilt, regret, etc, make him strangely relatable. His role is impactful and well-delivered.

Divina Thakur has played the role of Kuttimani, who is a scheming, cunning, fox-minded person, constantly trying to poison Chandu's mind with vicious thoughts. She has nailed her character and does not fail to make the audience hate her.

Another noteworthy role is that of Shivajith Padmanabhan as Aromal Chekaver. Other actors such as Himarsha Venkatsamy as Unniyarcha and Satheesh Menon as Kunhiraman have also done a good job.

Analysis

The plot of Veeram takes common moral elements such as greed and betrayal and transforms them into something unique and refreshing. Although the narrative is quite simple, the movie is an engaging one.

The main plus point of this film is its stellar filmmaking and attention to technicalities. The cinematography is brilliant. The CGI is to be marveled at and is a milestone in terms of Malayalam cinema and its history with CGI. When it comes to films such as Veeram, it is important to have a strong technical base because otherwise the film is sure to fall flat on its face. These technicalities add so much more impact to the story, and Veeram has nailed every single one of those aspects. The cinematography of the fights and duels is also carefully taken care of, with locations such as Ajanta and Ellora caves being made part of the shoot.

The writing in terms of dialogues in the film is pretty solid. They not only make an impact but try to delve inside and showcase the essence of each character. It makes the film all the more interesting and comprehensible to watch.

Veeram is also immersed in the culture of Kerala and the North Malabar region, with a lot of focus on elements of Kalaripayattu included in the film. Even the language they speak has a certain North Malabar touch to it. The attention to detail in these terms is quite commendable.

However, what the film lacks is an engaging and relatable depth in terms of emotional and moral sequences. It does little to enhance the emotional scenes in a way that the audience can feel empathy for the characters and the story.

What's There?

  • Great plot
  • Amazing cinematography and CGI
  • Great attention to detail

What's Not There?

  • No depth or relatability in emotional scenes.

Verdict

Veeram may fall short in some aspects, but it is a landmark film in many more aspects in the realm of Malayalam cinema. With good acting, lessons, morals, and visuals, it can definitely be termed a must-watch.
