Plot
Achuvinte Amma, the film’s title, stands for Achu's Mother. Accordingly, the storyline revolves around a single mother, Vanaja, and her daughter, Achu. Vanaja is an insurance agent at LIC, and Achu is an aspiring lawyer. The two of them are very close, but no mention of the father, or any other existing family can be made.
Everything seems to be going smoothly. One day, Achu meets Ijo, short for Immanuel John. They soon develop a bond and fall in love, desiring to get married. She takes this proposal to Vanaja, who vehemently opposes it upon discovering that Ijo is an orphan. Hence begins a series of events that leads to a long line of disagreements between Vanaja and Achu. Eventually, it exposes the dark and tragic secret about their family that Vanaja had buried deep inside a long time ago.
Star Performance
Achuvinte Amma stars Urvashi as Vanaja, the mother, and Meera Jasmine as Aswathy (Achu). Their performances are phenomenal, to say the least, as they each come into their role perfectly. There is excellent chemistry between the two as well; they bring an effortlessly smooth mother-and-daughter dynamic to the film.
This film is Urvashi’s comeback to Malayalam cinema after quite a few years, and we can suffice it to say that she has made a significant and relevant comeback. Meera Jasmine captures the essence of Achu and brings all her sides together, that of a good daughter and of a girl in love, and delivers them with ease.
Narain plays the role of Immanuel John or Ijo and has done considerably well in adding complexity to the film.
Analysis
Achuvinte Amma tries to be a wholesome film about a mother and daughter and their relationship. While it is most certainly that, it also explores many darker themes. During the film, a lot of societal issues are delicately discussed while still keeping in mind the general theme of the film.
At the heart of the film is Vanaja and Achu's relationship, portrayed authentically and beautifully. Vanaja and Achu have a great dynamic together, and even when they are at odds with each other, you can see the love and respect they always hold for the other person.
The relationship between Ijo and Achu is shown very well.
Another solid plus point of the film is its soundtrack. Composed by the great Ilaiyaraaja, the songs just hit the spot. The songs in the film are very touching and emotional and pair wonderfully with the visuals. Songs such as "Enth Paranjulam Nee Entheth Ake Vave" promise to stay with you for a long time after you listen to them.
All in all, Achuvinte Amma explores the beautiful story between a protective mother and her daughter. Within the guise of this, they also explore many other themes, layering them smoothly into the plot and making the film a layered and complex masterpiece.
