Plot

Munna Lal Mishra falls head over heels for Zoya Faraz while on a trip to the hills. However, both face several obstacles when it comes to convincing their parents to the inter-faith marriage. Moreover, Zoya's parents aim to marry her to a boy of their choice. Will the two succumb to the circumstances, or will their love overcome all?

Star Performances

Ravi Bhat deserves special mention for making the film visually appealing, including the aesthetic shots taken while shooting in Uttarakhand.

The lead pair of Aksha and Rohit have done justice to their roles. So have some of the supporting actors, including Govind Namdeo, Pankaj Berry, etc.

Analysis

Inter-faith marriages. Now this is one subject very few people would talk about. Even if movies are made, none of them are remotely nuanced. They are either on the extreme like 'Raanjhanaa' and 'Gadar,' or become preachy like 'Bombay' and 'Love Hostel'.

'Shubh Nikah,' however, tries to be as realistic as possible. There is no room for over-the-top moments, nor do the makers want it to be biased towards any side. That is a victory for Arshad Siddiqui, who can pat his back for a decent screenplay.

The way the two lovers attempt to convince each other's parents can remind one of ' 2 States Click to look into! >> Read More... ', only that the two lovebirds are not from different regions but different faiths altogether! There are no bizarre moments in this film, which makes this a refreshing experience.

The performances are more than just decent. The lead pair of Aksha and Rohit have put in good effort as the star-crossed lovers. So have some of the supporting cast, including Govind Namdeo, who is playing the role of Munna's stern father. Even Pankaj Berry and Ehsan Khan are decent in their respective roles.

However, to seem real, the film is slightly awkward in some sequences. The first half is simple and likable, but the second half is so cliched that it might even test the patience of some viewers.

What's There?

  • Good camerawork by Ravi Bhat
  • Earnest performances from Rohit Vikkram and Aksha Pardasany
  • Able support from the supporting cast

What's Not There?

  • Issues with the pace of the movie
  • Cliched second half
  • An unimpressive soundtrack

Verdict

'Shubh Nikah' is one of the few films about interfaith marriage that is both realistic and endearing. It could have been better, but it certainly has its heart and soul in the right place. If you have a knack for the unconventional, do go and watch this film!
