Essentially “ Rangrezz Click to look into! >> Read More... ” is the Hindi remake of several previous South Indian versions. But this is the joint handiwork of producer Vashu Bhagnani Vashu Bhagnani was born on 19th of April in Kolkat >> Read More... and famed director Priyadarshan, who had made the earlier Tamil version himself. In many ways, for both of them, this film is somewhat different from their past ventures, this being a much simpler tale devoid of the usual gloss and glamour, and based on more mundane surroundings with life-like characters holding sway.
Plot: The plot starts with a simple narrative about 3 good friends staying in a Mumbai lower middle-class locality, Rishi (Jackky), Vinu (Amitosh) and Pakyya (Vijay), all of whom are from differing backgrounds, and with different aspirations. While Rishi with his typically middle-class mentality is keen on getting a police job with a guaranteed pension, so that he can seal his marriage with his childhood love Megha (Priya), Vinu cherishes a plan to put up a computer coaching class to get things going. Pakyya on the other hand, being the worst off financially, inspires himself with dreams of making it big on a likely Gulf job, though the reality of unemployment stares at him. In effect, they all survive on their mutual camaraderie. At this juncture enters the fourth friend, known earlier to Rishi, who has an urgent love problem to solve, with a bad father unwilling to give over his daughter in marriage. All the other three pitch in with their efforts, and undertake several typical ‘rescuing the lover girl’ stunts including kidnapping her to get the lovers together in wedlock. It, therefore, turns out to be quite upsetting when they realize that all their efforts have gone in vain, as the two lovers have had large differences and decided to fall apart.
Review: The second half of the film is distinctly on a different course from the simplistic beginning it had. The plot then zigzags through several other dramatic incidents involving all the friends and the evolving pairs, till it reaches a final climax, but not before the usual combination of lecturing on lofty themes, counterbalanced with song and dance numbers. Priyadarshan deftly takes over from the script of Mushtaq Shiekh Mushtaq Shiekh is a renowned film commentator, aut >> Read More... , and churns out the plot in a direct manner without any trappings, and seems to have been quite successful to keep the audience gripped the entire first half. The interest has to be revived through various typical diversions, all of which may not be very relevant. But as seems to be happening in most films of this nature the tempo starts slipping in the second half with forcibly added incidents just to fill the gaps, although some of these scenes in themselves may have been well executed.
The film amply justifies its decision to go with a strong cast, as the 4 friends’ bonding seems to be appreciable and appropriate to the nuances of their individual characters. While Jackky seems slightly underplayed in his role, Vijay Verma Vijay Verma is an Indian actor who has quickly mad >> Read More... in the role of Pakkya, the rabble rouser gets ample opportunity to underline his talents. The female characters, of which there are quite a few are all in bit roles, Priya Anand Priya Anand is a popular Tamil actress who has app >> Read More... as Jackky’s childhood lover performs her animated character with aplomb.
Technical Aspects: On the technical side, Santosh Sivan’s camera work deserves notice, while the duo of Sajid-Wajid once again puts up some memorable tunes with their stamp of freshness.
Verdict: At the end of it all, it is an enjoyable film, presented at least partly in interesting manner. Priyadarshan does not entirely disappoint though he himself would not put it as one of his best films.
