Star Performance
Mckenna Grace gives a powerful performance as Judy Warren showing a young hero who's both fragile and tough. Madison Iseman mixes funny moments with protective strength in her role as Mary Ellen balancing jokes with serious tension. Katie Sarife adds layers to her character Daniela making viewers feel for her struggles. Even though Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga don't appear much as Ed and Lorraine Warren, they still bring star power that connects the movie to the bigger "Conjuring" world.
Analysis
"Annabelle Comes Home" boasts tension and is spooky, first of all, with Warren's artifact room serving as a core creepy backdrop to the movie. Direction by Gary Dauberman and the script instill a sense of dread as new supernatural beings are brought in: the Ferryman, the Bride, and Black Shuck. The movie depends on jump scares and psychological horror for that uneasy feel. This, however, often gives way to inconsistency regarding pacing, with some scenes easily predictable. On the bright side, visual effects and sound design really pump up the scare factor, although it eventually falls back on known horror clichés rather than breaking new ground.

Verdict
"Annabelle Comes Home" is one of the masterpiece in the "Conjuring" series, striking the appropriate eerie mood and effective scares. Great performances by Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman, and Katie Sarife give depth and emotional heft to their characters. Fresh supernatural elements add new twists to the franchise, while the Warren's artifact room serves up a chilling backdrop for the frights.
The movie, however, falls back upon the expected horror conventions and jump scares, which seem a bit too formulaic for the true genre devotee. Sometimes, there isn't any smooth flow of the story, and treading on well-worn paths rather than making efforts in new ideas can make it underwhelming for some people. While this installment doesn't do anything too new with the horror genre or really add anything groundbreaking to its series, it does remain something fans of the series can engage themselves with and get spooked over.
