Plot
In this film, Jesuit priests Sebastiao Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Francisco Garupe (Adam Driver) come to Japan in the 17th century looking for their missing mentor, Father Ferreira (Liam Neeson). They learn soon that the country has made Christianity a crime, and local believers are viciously persecuted by the authorities in power. With the aid of a tortured guide, Kichijiro (Yosuke Kubozuka), they secretly minister to hidden Christian communities with sacraments and spiritual guidance. But they live in constant fear of being discovered. As the persecution escalates, Garupe and Rodrigues are separated. Rodrigues is soon arrested by the cruel Inquisitor Inoue (Issey Ogata), who makes him watch the torture of Japanese Christians. The authorities don’t want him dead but rather that he apostatizes — publicly renounce his faith — by stepping on a fumi-e, a carved image of Christ. Rodrigues wrestles with witnessing the torture of believers for their devotion. He finds out that Father Ferreira has apostatized and must now live as a Japanese citizen. The priest’s faith is shaken, and he is haunted by guilt and uncertainty. If renouncing his faith can save lives, does that make him a coward — or is it the ultimate act of compassion? What choice will he make?
Star Performance
The film is an exceedingly well-made film propelled by the precision of Martin Scorsese’s direction and his rich storytelling. Andrew Garfield gives an emotionally wrought performance as Rodrigues, embodying the priest’s internal conflict with harrowing intensity. Adam Driver provides quiet strength as Garupe, while Liam Neeson lends gravitas as the fallen mentor. Issey Ogata’s performance as an especially menacing Inquisitor adds layers of menace. Rodrigo Prieto’s cinematography is luminous, a portrait of Japan’s cruel and gorgeous terrain. The film’s immersive sound design, spare score and meticulous pacing contribute to its meditative tone. “Silence” is a gorgeous and philosophically profound inquiry into faith and suffering.
Analysis
Silence - A gorgeously introspective film about the depths of faith, the liability of doubt and the consequences of colonialism. Martin Scorsese’s direction is meticulous enough to give the film’s slow pacing room to heighten its emotional and philosophical weight while leaving enough room for the crowd to fill in the character details on its own. Andrew Garfield’s performance is complex, showing Rodrigues’ spiritual crisis with care and fragility. Adam Driver and Liam Neeson do well in supporting roles, but Issey Ogata’s take on the Inquisitor leaves a haunting thought on my mind. Rodrigo Prieto’s cinematography beautifully encompasses the austere grandeur of Japan, underscoring the film’s themes of alienation and agony. Still, the film’s length and much of its pace are deliberately crushing, if not overwhelming, for some viewers and, combined, seem to take it away from mainstream mainstreaming. That absence of a traditional score heightens the oppressive silence, reflecting the protagonist’s internal struggle. Silence is not easy watching but it is a devastating meditation on faith and endurance, ensuring that it one of Scorsese’s most profound works.

Verdict
Silence (2016) is a monstrous, deeply consider the film, which stretches its meditative pacing and its weighty subjects of faith and suffering to their extremes. Scorsese detailed visuals, enhanced by arresting performances by Andrew Garfield and Issey Ogata, add to its immersive but difficult experience. It’s not for all tastes, but what a masterful cinematic achievement it is.
