Blackbird is a drama film based on a high school student. It is the first film directed by Patrik-Ian Polk at the same time the producers include Keith Louis Brown, Patrik-Ian Polk, Carol Ann Shine, Isaiah Washington and Matthew Young. The main characters in the movie are Mo’Nique, Julian Walker, Isaiah Washington, Kevin Allesse, Gary Leroi Gray, Nikki Jane, Torry Laamar, Terrell Tilford and D. woods. The story is written by Rikki Beadle-Blair and Patrik-Ian Polk, the cinematography is done by Eun-ah Lee, editing is done by Bryan Colvin and music is composed by Adam Samuel Goldman.
Plot
The film’s story begins with Julian Walker, playing the role of Randy Rousseau, a young boy who is good in curriculum and extracurricular activities. He is truly devoted to God and is afraid to accept himself as an homesexual individual. He presumes homosexuality as a sin due to the religious influence of his family. But as he touches adulthood, he is unable to suppress his feelings for same sex people and confronts the truth to his friend. His family is against his sexual preference and blames him for the loss of his sister. Will Randy accept his true self? Will his family support him?
Star performance
Julian Walker has gracefully embraced his transition from a fearful young boy to a man, ready to cope with his true personality. His journey was not easy, but with the support from his friends, he managed to maintain his dignity in a world full of judgements. Mo’Nique, is seen as the mother of randy, is intensely religious and is against his son’s sexual preference. Isaiah Washington, playing the role of Randy’s father, struggles to maintain a stable relationship with his children. The connection between the supporting characters is visible on screen.
Analysis
The film’s story focuses on a teenage boy Randy, who is unsure about his sexual preferences, as his family members manipulate him to accept that the negative thoughts occurring in his mind are irrelevant. Instead of accepting Randy as he is, he is forced to believe that his homosexual thoughts are wrong. However, Randy’s classmates support him and help him discover his true self without fear. Randy had to go through guilt and face problems due to differences in the thinking process of the family members.

Verdict
