Carol is based on a 1952 novel The Price of Salt, written by Patricia Highsmith. This is a story dealing with lesbian love, and it would have created quite a sensation at that time. Now let’s see how the onscreen version is.
Plot
Carol is set in the 1950s. And Carol, who is an affluent homemaker, has ‘desires’ for Therese Belivet (a 20 something girl working in a department store;she has a boyfriend too) that she expresses in a subtle manner. Well, this is enough to comprehend the plot of the story.

Analysis
Todd Haynes has worked on films centered on women and in the film he executes the culpable feeling that most women get when they succumb to selfish joys. It is a surprise as to how a man can work on a women-centric film with such finesse.
It is to be noted that most of the important scenes in the movie happen in a car. Well, a car too seems to have a role in this movie!
