Tamil Chair In Harvard: The Need And The Deed

Tamil is one of the ancient languages and one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world. More than 70 million people are speaking Tamil, worldwide. The prestigious recognition given to Tamil is that it is one of the seven ancient languages that still exist. Along with Tamil, we have Sanskrit, Chinese, Persian, Greek, Latin and Hebrew. A specialty in Tamil is that it is the only language that has met all the 11 criteria required for an ancient language. Tamil has a lot of treasures in it. Abundant books on literature that had been created even hundreds and hundreds of years back are available in Tamil. The global reach of Tamil literature is limited, despite its classic and ancient stand. The need for the Tamil chair in the Harvard University has so many reasons. The primary goal is to make the language spread worldwide. As Harvard is one of the oldest Universities with the international students, if a special chair for Tamil is created then, it would attract the students from worldwide. As there is a research needed to bring out the ancient Tamil literature and the matter of prestige to the language, the chair is needed. It helps to build history; not only Tamil but Indian. In short, by creating the Tamil chair, the legacy of the language will survive and will develop. Tamil chair is an effort to promote the significance of studies relating to Tamil language. If the chair is endowed, Tamil will be taught in the University, till the university works. Total amount needed to set up a Tamil chair is $6MM and so far $2.85 MM is collected. Tamils living in abroad including the Canadian Tamils, Dallas Tamils and many others have donated. Dr. Sambandham and Dr. Janakiraman from US are making the efforts to bring the Tamil chair. It is heard that Salem Triveni Groups donated $1 lakh. Tamilnadu government has donated Rs. 10 crores.
