One does not need rocket science to understand the dire state of Kollywood, and the string of failures it has been receiving since February.
While there are many reasons for it, actor Samuthirakani believes there is a simple reason behind it: the reluctance of local exhibitors.
In a no-holds-barred interview, the actor blamed the local distributors and exhibitors for over-relying on big-budget releases and refusing to give due space to small films, which have the potential of throwing big surprises. According to the actor, this was also one reason why he gave up on directing films since he received negligible support on this front.
He even did not hold back from taking jibes at the exhibitors for prioritizing ‘Manjummel Boys’ over local releases, mentioning that he won’t be surprised if ‘Gunaa’ is re-released to fill the ‘empty coffers’.
Samuthirakani might not be very far from the truth. Irrespective of his opinion, Tamil cinema has been facing a really tough time at this moment. Except for January, there has not been a single occasion when Kollywood came up with a brilliant film that set the cash registers ringing. Even big-budget ventures like ‘Laal Salaam’, which starred Rajinikanth in an extended cameo didn't do well.
As of now, the actor is focusing on two major projects: ‘Indian 2’, starring
