Pennycuick’s Birthday Will Be Celebrated As A Government Event – EPS

He >> Read More... ” announced that the birthday of Pennycuick, who built the Mullaperiyar Dam, will be celebrated as the government event. Pennycuick was born on 15^th January 1841 at Pune. Penny was sent to Cheltenham College in England for his higher studies. He returned to India in 1860. Till 1896, Pennycuick served in the Public Works Department. He constructed the historical Mullaperiyar Dam in his term of six years in the PWD. With the Mullaperiyar dam, lakhs of acres of the land are irrigated. This dam serves as the source of irrigation for Madurai, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul and Sivagangai districts. 

After an in-depth analysis of the condition of the land, Pennycuick used lime and Surki paste to construct the dam, which stays strong since 1895. Pennycuick said that he would be in the earth for only once and so he needed to do some good deeds. It should not be ignored, as he wouldn’t be back again, said the colonel. With his strong will power, the great man constructed the dam and had been treated as the god for those irrigation areas!
