Looks like the fight of the exhibitors did not go in vain. Following intervention from actor Dileep, the Film Exhibitors Union of Kerala has announced to end of their almost week-long protest.
For those unaware, the Film Exhibitors Union of Kerala had several issues with the producers of the Malayalam film industry, including prioritizing early OTT releases over adequate compensation to the exhibitors. Finding no other option, the exhibitors resorted to an indefinite strike, which meant that post-23 February, no new film from the Malayalam industry would be allowed to be released in cinema halls.
However, actor Dileep, who is also the Vice Chairman of this union, decided to intervene for himself. While the tussle between the producers and the exhibitors is not over yet, the FEUOK has announced that most of their demands have been met. As per various media reports, should any other trouble arise, the Kerala Film Chamber will be the final authority, and they shall resolve the issue at the earliest.
With that, the strike against Malayalam films has come to an end. However, this is also a reminder for Indian cinema to resolve the issue between OTT releases and the exhibitors at the earliest, or else another strike might be knocking on their doors soon.
