According to the director, when he wrote the script, Chadda is the first person that came into his mind, followed by Shweta Tripathi then Sanjay Mishraji. Bajpai and Rao were supposedly part of the film but due to the tight schedules, it didn’t work out. But he said he is happy with the casting.
In the film Masaan, four individuals converges at the Ganges in Varanasi; a lower-class boy who is desperately in love, a daughter living in guilt after a sexual encounter that ends up with a misfortune, a father that is losing his principles and a determined child longing for a family. They all wished to leave the didactic small town in which they are restrained.
The film received the FIPRESCI and the Promising Future prizes at the Cannes Film Festival and got a standing ovation. According to Neeraj, "I felt more happy for India than our film as we were winning the award after 26 years... it feels unreal. It is great that we have won award for our country."
