Rajashekhara Reddy, her husband, better known as YSR, was Andhra Pradesh's 14th Chief Minister. Her son, Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, is Andhra Pradesh's 17th and current Chief Minister. In December 2009, she was elected to the AP legislature as an unchallenged Congress candidate in the Pulivendula constituency by-election to fill the vacancy left by her husband's death. In 2014, she was defeated in the LS election for the Visakhapatnam seat.

The humiliation inflicted on the YSR family by the Congress high command prompted Y. S. Vivekananda Reddy, a family member, to threaten Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy politically. On November 29, 2010, Vijayamma resigned from the Congress party and assembly membership, as did her son, who resigned from both the party and his MP position. In the by-elections held on May 8, 2011, Vijayamma and her son Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy were re-elected to the assembly and Lok Sabha, respectively. Both of them ran in by-elections on behalf of her son's nascent YSR Congress Party, which was created on March 12, 2011. Jagan Mohan Reddy and Vijayamma maintained their seats in the Kadapa Lok Sabha and Pulivendula assembly by-elections, but as YSRCP candidates with record majorities. Jagan Mohan Reddy received an all-time high of 543,053 votes in Kadapa, while Vijayamma received an all-time high of 85,191 votes in Pulivendula.

By campaigning with her daughter, Y. S. Sharmila Reddy, Vijayamma led the YSR Congress Party to a stunning victory in the June 2012 by-elections, in which her party won 15 of the 18 assembly seats for which elections were held in the absence of her son, Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. Vijayamma embarked on many hunger strikes to protest numerous policies, including a power bill rise and the government's refusal to give cash for college fee reimbursement. She took part in various agitations, fighting for farmers and women and seeking justice on a variety of issues, including the Samaiky andhra agitation, which included an indefinite fast calling on the Indian government to maintain Andhra Pradesh undivided.
