Relangi Venkatramaiah

Relangi Venkatramaiah’s other name is Relangi Venkata Ramayya; he is known mononymously by his surname Relangi. He was an Indian producer, actor, and comedian who predominantly worked in the Telugu film industry. Also, he was a professional Harikatha performer and an expert Harmonium player. He was born on August 9, 1910. Relangi Venkatramaiah’s place of birth is Revulapalem village in the East Godavari district in Madras Presidency, British India (now Andhra Pradesh, India). He was raised in Kakinada. However, he didn’t show much interest in education because of his passion for acting. He married to Sridevamma.

Relangi Venkatramaiah began his initial acting career in stage and folk theatre. He took female roles in stage theatre. He commenced his film career by portraying the role of Vidushaka (Jester) in his first Telugu film, “Sri Krishna Thulabaram,” under the direction of C. Pullayya in 1935. As a production manager, he assisted Pullayya until he got a prominent break with the Telugu-language swashbuckler film “Gollabhama” in 1947. The following year, he portrayed a comedic role in the Telugu film “Vindhyarani,” directed by C. Pullayya in 1948, which was a big hit. He was a regular face in all the films made under the Vijaya Films banner from 1950. Relangi Venkatramaiah is well-known for his comic roles and dialogues during the 1950s and 1960s. His notable performances in films were Vipra Narayana (1954), Gunasundari Katha (1949), Donga Ramudu (1955), Missamma (1955), Appu Chesi Pappu Koodu (1958), Iddaru Mitrulu Click to look into! >> Read More... (1961), Lava Kusa (1963), Chaduvukunna Ammayllu (1963), Preminchi Choodu (1963), and many more. The Relangi Art Academy Award was instituted in his honor for the best comic performances.

Relangi Venkatramaiah also sung several songs such as “Adive Eduraivachche daka Padara Munduku Padipodam” in Gunasundari Katha (1949), “Talalene Ne Talalene Vinave Bala Naa Prema Gola” in Patala Bhairavi (1951), “Virise Vennelalo” in Dharma Devata (1952), “SivaSiva Moortivi gaNanaadhaa” in Pedda Manushulu (1954), and many more. He also acted & produced the film “Samajam” in 1960. In 1970, the Government of India honored him with a civilian award, the Padma Shri. He owned a theatre in Tadepalligudem named Relangi Theatre. Relangi Venkatramaiah died on November 26, 1975, in Tadepalligudem, Andhra Pradesh.
