L Muthappa

L Muthappa was a substantial makeup artist to the South Indian Cinema. He entered the film industry in 1959, in AVM Studios as a makeup artist., and worked for more than five decades over there. He was born even before the eve of independence. The first recommendation by the then leading director K. Subramaniam marked the beginning of his journey in this industry. His official start in the cinema career was with the veteran producer of the cinema world, AV MayyappaChettiar. He also did the makeup of veteran actor Kamal Haasan Kamal Haasan is the most versatile actor that Indi >> Read More... in his first film, ‘Kalathoor Kannamma.’ In his later life, he became the personal makeup man of Superstar Rajnikanth. Being a close associate to him, Muthappa has done the makeup of Mr. Rajni for numerous prominent films such as Murattukaalai, Pandiyan, Nallavanukku Nallavan, Gayatri, and Thambikku Entha Ooru. Since he had built a good relationship with the actor and was always eager to be on the screen, he started receiving small guest roles, comprising mostly of comical gigs. In major south movies like Velaikkaran and Annamalai and other thirty of Rajni’s films, he has been seen in the role of a supporting actor as well.

He was also a prominent makeup artist in the Bollywood and has showcased his art in cinemas like Barkha in 1959, Bindya in 1960, Man-Mauji in 1962, Pooja KePhool, and Main BhiLadki Hun, both released in 1964, and ultimately Do Kaliyaan, released in 1968. Throughout his career, he did several films, sometimes as a makeup artist and sometimes as a supporting actor. However, at the age of 75, on December 18, 2018, he passed away at a hospital in Chennai. Many actors who were associated with him or knew him paid tribute to this great makeup artist.
