Ashwin Saravanan is a South Indian director. The twenty-four-year-old stepped into the competitive Malayalam film industry after he quit his job at an IT firm. His works include the 2015 horror movie Maya and romantic film Iravaakaalam that got released in 2017.
His story of entering the industry as a director is contrary to every tale of a director that made a mark on the silver screen. Ashwin took birth in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. In the school, he read books about art and fiction. He got influenced by
and his film Guru.
That is when he started making short films in college. Ashwin also got featured in the reality show Naalaiya Iyakunar. He was a techie at mind, but his heart was in film-making. He got a job at the IT firm, Infosys at 21 and worked in a comfortable environment. At 23, he left the firm to pursue a career in film-making. He requested his parents to try a hand at direction and asked them for a couple of years.
He started by making short films. With several aspirants in the line of turning into a director, the journey for this young techie became difficult. He read books about film-making and worked on his script. Ashwin with the help of his friends shot a scene from the storyline to show it to the producers. He approached some production houses and finally, Potential Studios agreed to fund the movie.
Actress Nayantara also confirmed to do the lead role. In 2015, Ashwin released Maya, a horror thriller. It featured Aari, Nayantara, Azmath Khan, and others. It did the highest business on the silver screen in 2015. It got dubbed into Kannada and got a rating of four stars. Maya won awards at Chennai International Film Festival, IIFA Utsavam, and IBN Live Awards.
Maya gave a good scare to the audience and became a blockbuster. Filmed within thirty-five days, Ashwin received a positive response from the critics. Two years later, Ashwin unveiled his next venture, Iravaakaalam, a romantic drama featuring
, Sshivada, and SJ Suryah.
Produced by N Murali Ramasamy the movie got released in August 2017. It became Ashwin’s second project and earned his fame among the South Indian directors. His decision to quit the job and follow his heart proved to be successful. He lived up to his parents’ expectations and also made them proud.
