A. Balakrishnan is a famous Indian film director from the Tamil film industry. His works primarily involve biopics of various inspirational figures who paved the way for India’s development. He made his directorial debut with the film, Kamaraj, in 2014. Starring J. Mahendran, Richard Mathuram, and Sampath, this film follows the life of former Chief Minister of Madras (now Tamil Nadu) and president of Indian National Congress, K. Kamaraj.
Later, Balakrishnan digitally remastered this film and added 20 new scenes and re-released it in April 2015. He directed his next film, Mudhalvar Mahatma (2012), and also made his debut as a writer. It stars S. Kanagaraj as Mahatma Gandhi and AnupamKher as a Chief Minister. Music maestro, Ilaiyaraaja, also features in this film having collaborated before with Balakrishnan on Kamaraj.
He’s directing another biopic, MGR, which follows the life of AIADMK founder and former Chief Minister, M. G. Ramachandran, played by actor Satish Kumar. It’ll showcase the actor turned politician’s career in the film industry and his political ties with two of the former Chief Ministers, J. Jayalalithaa, and C.N. Annadurai, of Tamil Nadu. The shooting of this much-awaited movie was inaugurated by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami in 2017.
