Eka Lakhani is a costume designer in Kollywood and Bollywood from Patiala, Punjab. She chose an exciting career designing costumes for many major films. Her costume design takes a focus on the actors’ appearance. Her costume design often lies at the heart of the stories of the actors in movies who want to show and tell the audiences how they look in the particular movie. Just choose any costumes that she has designed be it what Nithya Menon wore in OK Kanmani or the T-shirt and jacket which Anushka Sharma wore in NH10. It is said that she learnt to work on costume designing as per the script. While working as an assistant to Sabyasachi Mukherjee for ‘Raavan’, she was instructed by Sabyasachi that every costume speak the character. Hence, she had learned to take into account of character’s mood and situation that helps her in designing the costumes for movies. Eka was associated with the job of an assistant costume designer to Sabyasachi Mukherjee in Raavanan and Raavan. But later, she worked independently in movies like ‘OK Kanmani’, ’NH10’ and ‘Kaatru Veliyidai’. Her favorite costume design that she can remember is for Aditi Rao Hydari for movie ‘Kaatru Veliyidai’. Eka’s father – Bharat Lakhani is a renowned business tycoon in the field of textile in Mumbai and wanted her to follow his footstep and take a control of the family business. But, she had her own thoughts. While she was doing her undergraduate studies, she took a chance to join SNDT PVP to get her degree in fashion/apparel design. Eka even won a contest in the final show and bagged two awards in two different categories (best construction and collection). Yet, Eka’s ego was not satisfied and she wanted to scale more heights and went to Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and did courses on fashion design, fashion styling, and costume designing. When she came back to India, she got a film project ‘Raavan’ and she made her solo costume design debut with the Malayalam film ‘Urumi', followed by the Tamil film 'Kadal' and a number of other great movies. She also did costume designs for 'Gulaab Gang', '24', 'K Jaanu', 'Haseena Parkar' and other movies. Two of her projects such as 'Fanney Khan' and '99 Songs' is in the filming stage.
